Colorado artist Andy Taylor is inspired by the moments that stop him in his tracks. Moving him to pull out his sketchbook and capture the moments that strike him. With his sketch as a reference, Taylor returns to his studio to add color to the ink sketch in his notebook. His color selection reflects emotion evoked by the moment. From there, he stretches and primes his canvas and makes the frame. Then, translates the scenes captures in his small sketches into a painting. Taylor’s colorful, gestural style captures the quiet scenes that give him, and the viewer, a moment’s pause.
Ann Korologos Gallery spent the day with Andy. We visited his studio and joined him on a drive to Marion Gulch, one of his favorite areas near Carbondale. Consequently, we saw first hand what inspires Andy Taylor and why painting is still his passion after 49 years.
