Each of these artists has a unique style, but they all find their inspiration on-scene, and they share the passion of documenting this rugged and disappearing way of life.
The Western Experience highlights the interaction of man with western plains—especially from the perspective of ranchers—as explored by painters Terry Gardner, Simon Winegar, Nathan Solano, and Sean Wallis. On view June 13 with an Artists’ Reception on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 from 5 to 7PM at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt.
“The Western Experience is about honoring ranchers, from modern-day cowboys to long-abandoned barns,” shares Ann Korologos. “Each of these artists has a unique style, but they all find their inspiration on-scene, and they share the passion of documenting this rugged and disappearing way of life. The barns and ranchers you see are part of history, preserved in time as the West transforms around them.”
Terry Gardner was born and raised in Missouri and moved to Colorado to paint outdoors as a plein air artist. A contemporary painter of the American West, Gardner depicts the hard work of ranchers and farmers, capturing herds and ranch hands, and barns both working and forgotten. Gardner strives to paint what is not visible to the eye by capturing the mystery and intrigue of the past and present through his moody palette and subject matter.
Simon Winegar is a Utah-based painter inspired by his love for the natural beauty of the outdoors, including man-made additions like weathered barns and ranch houses. While his subjects vary, he most enjoys painting en plein air, and “creating moods that are often romantic and thought-provoking,” shares the artist. Winegar’s tonalist landscapes are meant to beautify the world and move the viewer. One must look closely to discern the hidden elements in each work.
Nathan Solano was born in Utah and raised in Southern Colorado. He was finally able to pursue his passion for art full-time in his 40s and has since become recognized for his powerful and evocative scenes of the true grit of western life. Solano finds his inspiration by participating in the events he paints, capturing fleeting moments through photography and developing his striking images in the studio.
Sean Wallis was born and raised in Utah. As an Impressionist, Sean pays close attention to the relationship of light and color, favoring detailed scenes on large canvases en plein air. Ready to paint within 5-minutes at any given time, Wallis enjoys the challenge of painting that which is rapidly vanishing—whether that be light or history, or whether he is painting California missions, botanical gardens or old barns of the Southwest.
