Ann Korologos Gallery presents “Light: F/X,” a group examination of the impact of light and the ways in which it defines a form and creates the mood of the moment. Featured artists are Heather Foster, Kate Starling, Sean Wallis, and Simon Winegar.
The exhibition is on view April 5 through May 5, 2022 at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Colorado.
“In the mid-19th century the effects of light in painting were first celebrated by a group of artists known as Luminists and included, Fitz Henry Lane, Martin Johnson Heade, Sanford Gifford and John Frederick Kensett, among others. Their works emphasized calm waters, serene landscapes and hazy skies. The artists featured in Light: F/X draw from this tradition, using light to refine the world around us, change the landscape, affect our emotions, and illuminate the depth and breadth of our perception,” reflects gallery owner, Ann Korologos. “These artists paint in oil, yes, but their eye sees the light and their skill allows them to capture it.”
Heather Foster of Santa Fe, New Mexico depicts the wild landscapes of Colorado such as Gunnison’s Black Canyon and the cattle that roam the land in familiar places like Salida and Abiquiu. Foster enjoys showing evidence of her thought process, leaving the changes and refinements in drawing and the composition evident on the canvas.
Kate Starling lives and paints near Utah’s Zion National Park, with visits to Colorado. Starling’s paintings portray the natural world and focus on communicating a sense of place, atmosphere and dazzling light, retaining the immediacy of the painting experience. Starling knows well the power of emotion that the land can trigger in her when seen in a particular light, and she strives to evoke equally strong memories and emotions for the viewers of her work.
Sean Wallis is a painter based in Salt Lake City, Utah. As an impressionist, Wallis pays close attention to the relationship of light and color, capturing fleeting moments with the texture of oil paint and a broad, colorful palette. Wallis’ barn series underscores the integration of man and nature, while honoring their independent beauty. His work with light, hue, and atmosphere manifest through skillful combinations of colors that vibrate and excite the eye.
Simon Winegar is a Utah-based painter inspired by his love for the natural beauty of the outdoors, including man-made additions like weathered barns and ranch houses. While his subjects vary, he most enjoys painting en plein air, “creating moods that are often romantic and thought-provoking,” shares the artist. Winegar’s landscapes are meant to beautify the world and move the viewer.
